An exciting new curriculum for the new school year

An exciting new curriculum for the new school year

By Mr Adam Cochrane

We at Green Oasis School have had a wonderful start to our new academic year. It’s great to see the children so engrossed in their learning. I wanted to invite you to take a glimpse into the exciting topics that our children will be engaged in over the next few weeks.

Year 1 Superheroes

Year 1 children have spent the first two weeks familiarizing themselves with our school: learning where things are and how the day is structured. We are really pleased with the way they have settled in.

The children are now really excited about their first topic at GOS – Superheroes. They will immerse themselves in reading and writing with comic books as their inspiration. The children will also learn about real-life heroes and about how they use their senses to explore the world. They will also test their superpowers by climbing, running, jumping and moving to music. There will be opportunities for us to create superhero works of art and to compose superhero soundtracks on instruments.

Year 2 -Towers, Tunnels and Turrets

Our Year 2 children have been having a terrific time with their topic 'Towers, Tunnels and Turrets'. They have been investigating castles and even building their own. They have also been testing the strength of their structures. As they move on, they will learn about some of the super structures around the world. Year 2 will improve PE skills by playing 'attacking and defending' games.

Year 3 -Flow

Year 3 have thrown themselves into learning with the topic 'Flow', which is all about rivers. They have been investigating water and soil samples. Using their creativity, they will write journals as river travelers and journey on an imaginary boat to rivers around the world. Their map reading and research skills will help them to learn about world-famous rivers. At the end of the project, they will create a newsflash to explain what they have learned and build a bridge.

Year 4-Potions

Poisonous potions, aromatic brews, vapors and sticky goos … Welcome to the amazing world of Potions that Year 4 are exploring! In learning all about magical potions, the Year 4s already have created their own perfume bottles and written warnings about their dangerous mixtures. Becoming super scientists, they will investigate chemical reactions and states of matter. Shakespear’s play, Romeo and Juliet will inspire them to write scripts, and they’ll think of an alternative ending for this tragic tale. Year 4 children will write spells with magical, strange or gruesome effects – what ingredients will they use?

Year 5-Stargazers

Year 5 are taking a trip to the stars, planets and suns and discovering the amazing wonders of the night sky in Stargazers. Over the next few weeks, they will read information texts to find out about the solar system and sun. They will create their own solar system and investigate the cycle of day into night. As well as investigating Galileo and the planets, they will make a space shuttle or satellite, testing their materials for durability. At the end of the project, they will look at alien-themed comics, invent their own aliens and consider the big question: why is there life on Earth?

Year 6- Hola Mexico

Over the next few weeks, Year 6 will explore the unique country of Mexico, from its towering temples to its fun-packed festivals. They will watch a traditional Mexican performance and join in with percussion instruments. To cool down afterwards, they will have a refreshing drink of sangrita or limeade. They will learn about the 'Day of the Dead' and create 3-D skulls. With the Chihuahuan Desert as their imagined location, the children will write postcards and clear instructions for a game.
