Year 4 ‘Potions’
Author: Ms Jo Slatter
Year 4 have had a fantastic time with the new curriculum. Our first unit is 'Potions' which enables the children to be Scientists and experience the labs.
Scientific enjoyments
They have learnt how to conduct experiments such as: - freezing bubbles, sorting solids liquids and gases, freezing water balloons plus the process of melting.
In addition to this the children have also experienced ‘wacky races’ and seeing how fast liquids travel down a tube.
This is just a few of the many Scientific lessons that they have been undertaken all with enjoyment and great learning taking place.
The children have learnt to write a hypothesis, predictions, key question plus the results and conclusions drawn from the experiments. Their task now is to plan their own experiment showing what they have learnt about solids, liquids and gases.
Healthy potions
During topic lessons the children have had the opportunity to make their own healthy ‘potions’ using ingredients brought in from home. They tasted delicious and the smell coming from the labs was fabulous. Learning to become part of a team is a great skill so every child is enjoying this challenge.
Also, through our Art lessons, the children have created their own collage out of paper and t-shirts. Every child designed and made their own potion bottle out of clay. The children also researched what molecules are and made them out of brightly coloured plasticine.
It has been a very exciting time in Year 4 and the learning that has taken place is incredible to see. It has been a whole team effort with the children, parents, teachers and staff from GOS. Happy ‘Potions’ making and enjoy. There are still some days of the unit left so who knows what they will get up too!!! Watch this space!
