Learning Flow Via Practice
Author: Mr.Nathan Cliff
The start of the school year sees our Year 3 pupils embracing the topic of 'Flow'.
In fact the correct word to use is 'drenched' since we are soaking them with facts about water – particularly from rivers.
Don't worry, I can safely say we have not sent any children home dripping wet. However, our main objective is to imbibe pupils with both geographical and scientific facts about rivers, that will help to enhance other subjects such as English. The theme will literally (and figuratively) flow throughout the curriculum.
Water Samples (taken from local sources)
Some of the children visited local rivers, ponds and streams and collected water samples. We analysed the samples through careful study. In turn we expanded our vocabulary through accurate description.
Tablet Research
We used tablets to research key terms and words regarding rivers, such as: Oxbow Lake, Meander and Waterfalls. The pupils then produced brochures with diagrams, drawings and information.
Online Library: Study via Laptop
Using our new online library service, pupils entered into a specialized section designed for our topic. Pupils were able to access a wide range of book types regarding rivers. They were responsible for their own choices and academic progression. They could decide to focus on scientific, geographical or
fiction based learning.
