Student Leadership at GOS
At Green Oasis School, we believe that when students are given opportunities to make choices and express their voices, they are able to flourish and fully explore their potential for learning. Encouraging student voice empowers learners to develop confidence, responsibility, and initiative - qualities that extend well beyond the classroom and into their future lives.
Primary
At the Primary level, students are introduced to leadership through a range of opportunities that build responsibility, teamwork, and confidence. From Year 3, students can try out for school sports teams, where they develop teamwork while also supporting and encouraging their teammates.
Our Primary Student Council includes one elected representative from each class from Year 1 to Year 6. These students gather ideas and feedback from their classmates and bring them to council meetings, ensuring student voice is represented in school life.
Furthermore, each of our four houses - Flash Cheetah, Flow Orca, Grow Komodo, and Spark Lion - also has a House Captain, who works with staff Heads of House to help organise house activities and events. At the top of the student leadership structure are the Head Boy and Head Girl, who serve as role models and represent the Primary student body.
Finally, Year 6 students may apply to become Prefects, helping staff support younger students and monitor playtimes. Through these roles, students actively contribute to the daily life of the school and develop leadership skills that extend beyond the school community.
Secondary
At the Secondary level, student leadership becomes increasingly focused on independence, responsibility and meaningful student voice. Students are encouraged not only to represent their peers, but also to take an active role in shaping the culture and community of the school.
Each form elects a Class Representative, giving students a clear channel through which they can share ideas, raise concerns and contribute feedback about school life. Representatives act as a link between their classmates and the wider school community, helping students understand that leadership is about listening to others as much as speaking on their behalf.
Our four houses: Flash Cheetah, Flow Orca, Grow Komodo and Spark Lion provide further opportunities for leadership. House Captains work alongside the Heads of House to encourage participation, promote house spirit and support the organisation of House Events and competitions. Through these experiences, students develop confidence and organisational skills while helping to strengthen connections across year groups.
At the forefront of Secondary student leadership are our Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl. Together, they act as ambassadors and role models for the Secondary school, representing the student body and supporting important events, assemblies and school initiatives. They work collaboratively to promote student voice, contribute ideas and help strengthen communication between students and staff. As senior student leaders, they are expected to demonstrate the values and behaviours we want to see throughout the GOS community.
Leadership at GOS also extends beyond formal positions. Students are encouraged to propose and help lead student-led ECAs, contribute to assemblies, House Events and Typhoon Time, and take an active role in activities that enrich the wider school community. These opportunities allow students to turn their interests and ideas into something that can benefit others.
Through student leadership, we aim to develop young people who are confident enough to contribute, responsible enough to lead, and thoughtful enough to listen. By giving students genuine opportunities to participate in school life, we help them develop the communication, initiative and sense of community that will serve them well beyond GOS.
